Two Bernalillos, two kinds of projects
Bernalillo is an old town with a new town attached. The village along Camino del Pueblo has adobe and frame houses that go back a century, small lots, small kitchens, and a lot of character. North and east of the interstate, the subdivisions off US-550 and toward Placitas are mostly 1990s through 2010s builds with builder-grade finishes that are ready for an upgrade. The kitchens in those two Bernalillos could not be more different, and we work in both.
Village kitchens
Older Bernalillo houses have small kitchens with odd dimensions and often a low ceiling. Custom cabinetry is the only way to use every inch: a thirteen-inch gap next to the range becomes a pull-out spice cabinet instead of a filler strip, and a wall cabinet runs to the ceiling instead of stopping a foot short. We build the boxes to the measured room in our Edgewood shop and scribe to the walls on install. A compact kitchen done this way holds more than a bigger kitchen done with stock.
Countertops in these houses are usually tile or laminate. Either comes out in a morning, and a quartz or granite top goes on the same day. For a small kitchen the square footage is modest, which keeps the number reasonable even for a nicer slab.
Newer builds off US-550
The subdivisions north of town were built with a standard package: oak or maple cabinets, a laminate or entry-level speckled granite top, a drop-in sink. The cabinets are generally plywood and fine. The top is where the money goes. Replacing it with a lighter quartz or a granite you actually chose, with an undermount sink and a clean eased edge, is the highest-impact project in these houses. If the doors are tired, refacing at the same time turns a 2005 kitchen into a current one without touching the layout.
Hard water in the valley
Bernalillo town water is hard and the wells outside town are harder. That argues for a non-porous quartz, or for granite with a fresh sealer and a pattern that hides spotting. We bring it up at the measurement because it genuinely changes which slab we would recommend.

From Bernalillo we also cover Placitas up the hill, Algodones and the river communities to the north, and Rio Rancho across the river.
What we do in Bernalillo
- Granite Countertops — natural stone laid out on your actual slab, sealed at install.
- Quartz Countertops — engineered, non-porous, never sealed — the zero-maintenance choice.
- Marble Countertops — vanities, surrounds, and baking stations, with honest guidance on etching.
- Countertop Replacement — tear out tile, laminate, or dated stone and install new tops in days, not weeks.
- Custom Cabinets — built to your walls in our Edgewood shop, not ordered in three-inch increments.
- Cabinet Refacing — new doors, drawer fronts, and veneer on boxes that are still sound.
- Kitchen Remodeling — cabinets and countertops from one crew, on one schedule.
- Bathroom Remodeling — custom vanities and stone tops built to the space you actually have.
- Commercial & Hospitality — hotel vanities, reception desks, break rooms, and multi-unit cabinet packages.
Choosing a countertop material in Bernalillo
Most people arrive with a material already in mind. We will fabricate whatever you choose, but we are also going to tell you where each one struggles, because the climate here is not neutral. Bernalillo sits in the river valley with a mix of shaded older lots and wide-open newer subdivisions. Town water in Bernalillo is hard, and the outlying properties on wells are harder still.
- Granite — $55–$95 per sq ft installed. Igneous stone, every slab unique, indifferent to heat and sun. Needs sealing every one to three years. The default recommendation for sunrooms, outdoor bars, and anyone who cooks hard.
- Quartz — $65–$120 per sq ft installed. Engineered, non-porous, never sealed, consistent from sample to slab. The default for busy family kitchens and for anyone who will not think about maintenance. Keep it out of direct all-day sun.
- Marble — $75–$150 per sq ft installed. The most beautiful stone we cut and the softest. Perfect for vanities, fireplace surrounds, and a baking station. Etches from acids in a working kitchen, and we will say so.
- Quartzite — $85–$160 per sq ft installed. Natural stone that reads like marble and wears like granite. The answer when someone wants a white veined top in a kitchen that actually gets used.
Every one of those is templated, cut, and polished in our shop at 2369 Old Hwy 66, Edgewood, NM 87015, which is why we can hold a seam tight and keep an overhang even. You can see the full breakdown on our pricing guide.
How we build cabinets for Bernalillo homes
Custom does not mean expensive for its own sake. It means the box is built to the wall you actually have, in the increment you actually need, rather than the closest three-inch stock size plus a filler strip. In a region where very few walls are square and ceiling heights change room to room, that is usually the difference between a kitchen that looks fitted and one that looks installed.
- Boxes. Three-quarter-inch plywood, not particleboard. Particleboard that has met water once — a slow dishwasher leak, a sink trap drip — swells and never recovers. Plywood survives it.
- Doors and drawer fronts. Shaker, flat-slab, raised panel, or inset. Paint-grade maple or poplar, stain-grade alder, hickory, oak, or walnut. Knotty alder is the regional favorite for a reason: it takes a warm stain and hides the dings of a real household.
- Hardware. Soft-close hinges and full-extension undermount drawer slides as standard. Not an upgrade.
- Finish. Sprayed in the shop, not brushed on site. Conversion varnish over stain, or a catalyzed enamel over paint. It is the difference between a finish that holds up to fifteen years of hands and one that chips at the pulls in two.
- Layout. Drawers where you reach down, doors where you reach up. Pull-outs for trash and spices. A pantry that uses the full height of the wall. This is the part that makes a kitchen work, and it is the part a catalog cannot do.
Typical installed pricing runs $350–$900 per linear ft installed depending on wood species, door style, and how much of the run is drawers. Full details on custom cabinets →
Why hiring one shop for cabinets and countertops matters in Bernalillo
Most remodels in Bernalillo involve two companies who have never met: one sets cabinets, another fabricates stone. When the countertop does not sit flat, each explains why it is the other’s fault, and you are left holding a gap, a tube of caulk, and two phone numbers.
We run both sides under one roof. Cabinets are set and leveled by our crew, then the countertop is templated against those cabinets, cut in the same building, and installed by the same people. If something is off, it is ours, and there is nobody to point at. That is not a slogan. It is the reason the business is structured this way, and it is the reason the seams line up.
It also has a practical scheduling benefit. One contractor means one calendar, so cabinets and tops land in sequence instead of leaving your kitchen torn out for a week while a second company finds an opening.
How a project runs with us
- Call or send the form. Jesus answers, asks what you are trying to do, and books a time to come measure. Bernalillo is a straight shot up I-25 from Albuquerque and about an hour from our shop; no travel charge.
- On-site measurement and a straight conversation. We look at the room, the plumbing, the walls, and how you cook. If a material is wrong for your situation, this is where we say so.
- One written number. Template, fabrication, tear-out, install, haul-away, sealing. No per-item surprises after the fact.
- Slab or sample approval. For natural stone you see the actual slab and where the cuts land. For cabinets you approve a door sample and a finish chip.
- Fabrication in Edgewood. Cabinets built and finished in the shop. Countertops laser-templated once the cabinets are set and level, then cut on the CNC and polished.
- Install by the same crew. The people who measured are the people who build and the people who install. One point of contact from first visit to final walkthrough.
Countertop-only projects typically run one to two weeks from template to install. Full cabinet packages run four to eight weeks depending on wood and finish. A complete kitchen remodel is usually six to ten weeks once materials are approved.

Bernalillo Questions
Do you work in Bernalillo?
Yes. Bernalillo, Algodones, and the US-550 corridor toward Placitas are all in our regular rotation. There is no travel charge and estimates are free. Call (505) 203-5508.
We have an older house in the village with a small kitchen. Is custom worth it?
Small kitchens are where custom pays off most, because every inch counts and stock sizes waste inches. A custom package for a small galley or L-shaped kitchen is not a large order, and the difference in usable storage is dramatic. We can also reface if the boxes are sound.
What is the fastest upgrade for a newer Bernalillo build?
Replacing the builder laminate or entry-level granite with a quartz or granite top of your choosing. One day on site, two weeks of lead time, and it changes the whole room. Many people add a tile or full-height stone backsplash at the same time.
