The Westside kitchen, and how to fix it
Most of the Westside was built between 1995 and 2010, in large subdivisions by a handful of production builders: Ventana Ranch, Taylor Ranch, Paradise Hills, Volcano Cliffs, Seven Bar, the newer phases of Tierra West and Petroglyph Estates. The kitchens came with a standard package: maple or oak cabinets, laminate or entry-level speckled granite, a drop-in sink, a tile backsplash. The cabinets are plywood and fine. The top and the doors are dated. The layout is usually decent and does not need to change.
That is the easiest kind of kitchen to transform. New stone on the existing cabinets, a refacing if the doors bother you, and an undermount sink. No walls, no plumbing moves, no permits. A single day on site for the top and two to four days for a reface.
Countertop replacement
Laminate comes off in sections. Builder granite comes off in slabs. Either way the cabinets underneath are usually in good shape, we template on them, and the new top goes on the same day. Light quartz is the overwhelming choice on the Westside, because the point is to brighten a kitchen with wood cabinets and a west-facing interior. Granite in a lighter field for anyone with an east-facing breakfast nook that gets hard morning sun. Full details on countertop replacement.
Refacing the builder cabinets
The maple and oak boxes in Westside houses were installed by production crews who did it a thousand times, and they are usually square and solid. We keep them and replace what you see: new doors and drawer fronts in Shaker or flat-panel, veneer on the face frames and finished ends, soft-close hinges and full-extension slides, new pulls. White, soft greige, and a deep blue or green island are the colors people are choosing. It is the best cost-to-impact project we do, and paired with a new top it is one invoice and one schedule.
Volcano Cliffs and the newer custom lots
The custom and semi-custom homes along the escarpment are a bigger project: larger kitchens, big islands, often a wall of east glass toward the mountains. Morning sun is less intense than afternoon sun, but it is still high-altitude UV, and we talk about where quartz belongs. Stain-grade alder and painted Shaker are both common, and quartzite islands are increasingly the request.
South Valley
Older houses on bigger lots, often adobe or block, often added onto. These are custom-cabinet projects, built to the real walls in our Edgewood shop, with a stone that reads warm against plaster. The same approach we use in the North Valley.
Neighborhoods we cover
Ventana Ranch, Taylor Ranch, Paradise Hills, Volcano Cliffs, Seven Bar, Petroglyph Estates, Tierra West, Ladera, the West Mesa, and the South Valley. Also Rio Rancho next door and greater Albuquerque.

Choosing a countertop material in Westside Albuquerque
Most people arrive with a material already in mind. We will fabricate whatever you choose, but we are also going to tell you where each one struggles, because the climate here is not neutral. Westside homes face east toward the Sandias and get strong morning sun through kitchen windows and patio doors. Westside water is Albuquerque city water, hard enough to spot dark polished stone.
- Granite — $55–$95 per sq ft installed. Igneous stone, every slab unique, indifferent to heat and sun. Needs sealing every one to three years. The default recommendation for sunrooms, outdoor bars, and anyone who cooks hard.
- Quartz — $65–$120 per sq ft installed. Engineered, non-porous, never sealed, consistent from sample to slab. The default for busy family kitchens and for anyone who will not think about maintenance. Keep it out of direct all-day sun.
- Marble — $75–$150 per sq ft installed. The most beautiful stone we cut and the softest. Perfect for vanities, fireplace surrounds, and a baking station. Etches from acids in a working kitchen, and we will say so.
- Quartzite — $85–$160 per sq ft installed. Natural stone that reads like marble and wears like granite. The answer when someone wants a white veined top in a kitchen that actually gets used.
Every one of those is templated, cut, and polished in our shop at 2369 Old Hwy 66, Edgewood, NM 87015, which is why we can hold a seam tight and keep an overhang even. You can see the full breakdown on our pricing guide.
How we build cabinets for Westside Albuquerque homes
Custom does not mean expensive for its own sake. It means the box is built to the wall you actually have, in the increment you actually need, rather than the closest three-inch stock size plus a filler strip. In a region where very few walls are square and ceiling heights change room to room, that is usually the difference between a kitchen that looks fitted and one that looks installed.
- Boxes. Three-quarter-inch plywood, not particleboard. Particleboard that has met water once — a slow dishwasher leak, a sink trap drip — swells and never recovers. Plywood survives it.
- Doors and drawer fronts. Shaker, flat-slab, raised panel, or inset. Paint-grade maple or poplar, stain-grade alder, hickory, oak, or walnut. Knotty alder is the regional favorite for a reason: it takes a warm stain and hides the dings of a real household.
- Hardware. Soft-close hinges and full-extension undermount drawer slides as standard. Not an upgrade.
- Finish. Sprayed in the shop, not brushed on site. Conversion varnish over stain, or a catalyzed enamel over paint. It is the difference between a finish that holds up to fifteen years of hands and one that chips at the pulls in two.
- Layout. Drawers where you reach down, doors where you reach up. Pull-outs for trash and spices. A pantry that uses the full height of the wall. This is the part that makes a kitchen work, and it is the part a catalog cannot do.
Typical installed pricing runs $350–$900 per linear ft installed depending on wood species, door style, and how much of the run is drawers. Full details on custom cabinets →
Why hiring one shop for cabinets and countertops matters in Westside Albuquerque
Most remodels in Westside Albuquerque involve two companies who have never met: one sets cabinets, another fabricates stone. When the countertop does not sit flat, each explains why it is the other’s fault, and you are left holding a gap, a tube of caulk, and two phone numbers.
We run both sides under one roof. Cabinets are set and leveled by our crew, then the countertop is templated against those cabinets, cut in the same building, and installed by the same people. If something is off, it is ours, and there is nobody to point at. That is not a slogan. It is the reason the business is structured this way, and it is the reason the seams line up.
It also has a practical scheduling benefit. One contractor means one calendar, so cabinets and tops land in sequence instead of leaving your kitchen torn out for a week while a second company finds an opening.
How a project runs with us
- Call or send the form. Jesus answers, asks what you are trying to do, and books a time to come measure. The Westside is about forty-five minutes from our shop across I-40, and we batch Westside measurements and installs.
- On-site measurement and a straight conversation. We look at the room, the plumbing, the walls, and how you cook. If a material is wrong for your situation, this is where we say so.
- One written number. Template, fabrication, tear-out, install, haul-away, sealing. No per-item surprises after the fact.
- Slab or sample approval. For natural stone you see the actual slab and where the cuts land. For cabinets you approve a door sample and a finish chip.
- Fabrication in Edgewood. Cabinets built and finished in the shop. Countertops laser-templated once the cabinets are set and level, then cut on the CNC and polished.
- Install by the same crew. The people who measured are the people who build and the people who install. One point of contact from first visit to final walkthrough.
Countertop-only projects typically run one to two weeks from template to install. Full cabinet packages run four to eight weeks depending on wood and finish. A complete kitchen remodel is usually six to ten weeks once materials are approved.

Westside Albuquerque Questions
Our Westside house has the builder laminate from 2003. What is the upgrade?
Quartz or granite on the existing cabinets, with an undermount sink. One day on site, two weeks lead time. The cabinets in those houses are generally fine and the top is the whole difference. Pricing starts at $55–$95 per sq ft installed for granite and $65–$120 per sq ft installed for quartz, installed.
Do you reface the maple cabinets in Taylor Ranch and Ventana Ranch houses?
All the time. The boxes are plywood and square. New Shaker doors in white or greige, veneer on the frames, soft-close hardware, and the kitchen is current. Roughly half the cost of new cabinets.
Do you serve the South Valley too?
Yes. The South Valley, the Westside, and Rio Rancho are all one working area for us.
