A village of custom houses
Los Ranchos is a village inside the city, and it looks like one. Adobe and territorial houses on an acre or two, horse properties, orchards, and along Rio Grande Boulevard a run of large custom homes built over the last thirty years. Nothing is a tract house. Every kitchen is a specific problem to solve, and the people who live here expect it to be solved well.
Our approach is the same one we use in the North Valley and Corrales: measure every wall at three heights, build the boxes to those dimensions in our Edgewood shop, scribe on install, and template the stone against the installed cabinets. It is slower than ordering boxes from a catalog and it is the only way to get a fitted result in a house like this.
Furniture-grade kitchens
Los Ranchos kitchens lean toward cabinetry that reads like furniture. Inset doors with exposed hinges. A furniture-style island in walnut or a painted finish against an alder or hickory perimeter, with tapered legs and open shelving at one end. A hutch-style wall of glass-front uppers for dishes. Full-height pantries with a library ladder. We build all of that, and the finish is sprayed in the shop, which is what separates furniture-grade from site-finished.
Stone for a warm house
The same rule as the rest of the valley: honed and leathered natural stone reads right against plaster, brick, and wood. Warm gold and brown granites, leathered charcoal, travertine-toned quartzites, and a honed marble for a baking station or a bar. Book-matched islands for the larger homes along the boulevard. We lay out every cut on the actual slab and show you before anything is cut.
Wells, trees, and light
Many Los Ranchos properties are on private wells with hard water, which spots dark polished stone and argues for a honed finish or a lighter color. Mature cottonwoods shade most lots, which eases the sun concern and makes lighter finishes do real work in a kitchen that would otherwise be dim.

- Marble Countertops — vanities, surrounds, and baking stations, with honest guidance on etching.
- Countertop Replacement — tear out tile, laminate, or dated stone and install new tops in days, not weeks.

Choosing a countertop material in Los Ranchos de Albuquerque
Most people arrive with a material already in mind. We will fabricate whatever you choose, but we are also going to tell you where each one struggles, because the climate here is not neutral. Village lots are mostly shaded by mature trees, so interior light is the bigger design factor than UV. Many Los Ranchos properties are on private wells with hard water.
- Granite — $55–$95 per sq ft installed. Igneous stone, every slab unique, indifferent to heat and sun. Needs sealing every one to three years. The default recommendation for sunrooms, outdoor bars, and anyone who cooks hard.
- Quartz — $65–$120 per sq ft installed. Engineered, non-porous, never sealed, consistent from sample to slab. The default for busy family kitchens and for anyone who will not think about maintenance. Keep it out of direct all-day sun.
- Marble — $75–$150 per sq ft installed. The most beautiful stone we cut and the softest. Perfect for vanities, fireplace surrounds, and a baking station. Etches from acids in a working kitchen, and we will say so.
- Quartzite — $85–$160 per sq ft installed. Natural stone that reads like marble and wears like granite. The answer when someone wants a white veined top in a kitchen that actually gets used.
Every one of those is templated, cut, and polished in our shop at 2369 Old Hwy 66, Edgewood, NM 87015, which is why we can hold a seam tight and keep an overhang even. You can see the full breakdown on our pricing guide.
How we build cabinets for Los Ranchos de Albuquerque homes
Custom does not mean expensive for its own sake. It means the box is built to the wall you actually have, in the increment you actually need, rather than the closest three-inch stock size plus a filler strip. In a region where very few walls are square and ceiling heights change room to room, that is usually the difference between a kitchen that looks fitted and one that looks installed.
- Boxes. Three-quarter-inch plywood, not particleboard. Particleboard that has met water once — a slow dishwasher leak, a sink trap drip — swells and never recovers. Plywood survives it.
- Doors and drawer fronts. Shaker, flat-slab, raised panel, or inset. Paint-grade maple or poplar, stain-grade alder, hickory, oak, or walnut. Knotty alder is the regional favorite for a reason: it takes a warm stain and hides the dings of a real household.
- Hardware. Soft-close hinges and full-extension undermount drawer slides as standard. Not an upgrade.
- Finish. Sprayed in the shop, not brushed on site. Conversion varnish over stain, or a catalyzed enamel over paint. It is the difference between a finish that holds up to fifteen years of hands and one that chips at the pulls in two.
- Layout. Drawers where you reach down, doors where you reach up. Pull-outs for trash and spices. A pantry that uses the full height of the wall. This is the part that makes a kitchen work, and it is the part a catalog cannot do.
Typical installed pricing runs $350–$900 per linear ft installed depending on wood species, door style, and how much of the run is drawers. Full details on custom cabinets →
Why hiring one shop for cabinets and countertops matters in Los Ranchos de Albuquerque
Most remodels in Los Ranchos de Albuquerque involve two companies who have never met: one sets cabinets, another fabricates stone. When the countertop does not sit flat, each explains why it is the other’s fault, and you are left holding a gap, a tube of caulk, and two phone numbers.
We run both sides under one roof. Cabinets are set and leveled by our crew, then the countertop is templated against those cabinets, cut in the same building, and installed by the same people. If something is off, it is ours, and there is nobody to point at. That is not a slogan. It is the reason the business is structured this way, and it is the reason the seams line up.
It also has a practical scheduling benefit. One contractor means one calendar, so cabinets and tops land in sequence instead of leaving your kitchen torn out for a week while a second company finds an opening.
How a project runs with us
- Call or send the form. Jesus answers, asks what you are trying to do, and books a time to come measure. Los Ranchos is about forty minutes from the shop and in the same rotation as the North Valley and Corrales.
- On-site measurement and a straight conversation. We look at the room, the plumbing, the walls, and how you cook. If a material is wrong for your situation, this is where we say so.
- One written number. Template, fabrication, tear-out, install, haul-away, sealing. No per-item surprises after the fact.
- Slab or sample approval. For natural stone you see the actual slab and where the cuts land. For cabinets you approve a door sample and a finish chip.
- Fabrication in Edgewood. Cabinets built and finished in the shop. Countertops laser-templated once the cabinets are set and level, then cut on the CNC and polished.
- Install by the same crew. The people who measured are the people who build and the people who install. One point of contact from first visit to final walkthrough.
Countertop-only projects typically run one to two weeks from template to install. Full cabinet packages run four to eight weeks depending on wood and finish. A complete kitchen remodel is usually six to ten weeks once materials are approved.

Los Ranchos de Albuquerque Questions
Is Los Ranchos different from the North Valley for you?
The houses are similar — adobe, territorial, acreage — and the approach is the same: cabinets built to the measured walls, stone templated on the installed cabinets, finishes that read warm. The Village has a few more large custom homes along Rio Grande Boulevard, which means bigger islands and book-matched slabs.
We want an island that looks like furniture. Can you do that?
Yes. A furniture-style island in a contrasting wood — walnut or a painted finish against alder perimeter cabinets — with turned or tapered legs, a different stone top, and open shelving on one end. It is built in our shop as a single piece and set in place.
Do you build for casitas and outbuildings?
We do. Casita kitchenettes, workshop counters, mudroom and tack-room cabinetry. If it is wood or stone and it goes on the property, it comes out of the same shop.
