The Heights are where Albuquerque kitchens get redone
The Northeast Heights hold more kitchens from the sixties, seventies, eighties, and nineties than anywhere else in the state. Mossman and Hoffman ranch houses near Uptown. Split-levels and two-stories in Academy Hills and the Eldorado High area. Custom and semi-custom homes in Tanoan, High Desert, and the Foothills. The cabinets in most of those houses are still solid. The countertops, the doors, and the hardware are the problem, and that is a very specific, very fixable problem.
Replacing the top
Four-inch tile with brown grout. Laminate with a burn mark by the stove. Speckled builder granite from a 2004 flip. All of it comes out in a morning and the new top goes on the same day. For most Heights kitchens that is forty to sixty square feet, which is a single written number. Light quartz is the runaway choice, because the point is usually to brighten a kitchen with wood cabinets. Granite in a lighter field for anyone with west sun. Quartzite for the people who want marble and also cook.
Refacing instead of replacing
The boxes in a 1985 Heights kitchen are typically plywood and screwed to the studs properly. Tearing them out to buy new boxes is paying for something you already own. We reface: new Shaker or flat-panel doors and drawer fronts built in our Edgewood shop, veneer on the frames and ends, soft-close hinges, full-extension slides, new pulls. Paired with a new top it is the best cost-to-impact remodel we do, and it runs $150–$350 per linear ft installed installed.
Soffits, short uppers, and the 1970s layout
Many Heights kitchens have a drywall soffit above the upper cabinets and uppers that stop at seven feet. Removing the soffit and running new custom uppers to the ceiling adds a full shelf of storage and makes the room look taller. It is a custom-cabinet job, because the ceiling height in those houses varies wall to wall and stock boxes come in fixed heights. We build to the measured ceiling. The peninsula that closes the kitchen off from the family room often comes out at the same time, replaced with an island.
Foothills and High Desert
The custom homes against the mountain are a different project: larger kitchens, bigger slabs, book-matched islands, and a wall of west glass. Afternoon sun through that glass is hard on engineered quartz, so we recommend granite or quartzite for the exposed run and say so at the measurement. Stain-grade alder and rift oak cabinetry, full-height pantries, and a separate bar or butler’s pantry are typical.
Neighborhoods we cover
Uptown, Fair Heights, Academy Hills, Holiday Park, Eldorado High area, Sandia High area, Tanoan, High Desert, Glenwood Hills, the Foothills, and everything between Juan Tabo and Tramway. Also greater Albuquerque, the North Valley, and the Westside.

Choosing a countertop material in Northeast Heights
Most people arrive with a material already in mind. We will fabricate whatever you choose, but we are also going to tell you where each one struggles, because the climate here is not neutral. Foothills homes face west toward the sunset over the volcanoes, and that afternoon glass is hard on resin. Albuquerque city water is hard enough to spot dark polished stone, especially in the Heights.
- Granite — $55–$95 per sq ft installed. Igneous stone, every slab unique, indifferent to heat and sun. Needs sealing every one to three years. The default recommendation for sunrooms, outdoor bars, and anyone who cooks hard.
- Quartz — $65–$120 per sq ft installed. Engineered, non-porous, never sealed, consistent from sample to slab. The default for busy family kitchens and for anyone who will not think about maintenance. Keep it out of direct all-day sun.
- Marble — $75–$150 per sq ft installed. The most beautiful stone we cut and the softest. Perfect for vanities, fireplace surrounds, and a baking station. Etches from acids in a working kitchen, and we will say so.
- Quartzite — $85–$160 per sq ft installed. Natural stone that reads like marble and wears like granite. The answer when someone wants a white veined top in a kitchen that actually gets used.
Every one of those is templated, cut, and polished in our shop at 2369 Old Hwy 66, Edgewood, NM 87015, which is why we can hold a seam tight and keep an overhang even. You can see the full breakdown on our pricing guide.
How we build cabinets for Northeast Heights homes
Custom does not mean expensive for its own sake. It means the box is built to the wall you actually have, in the increment you actually need, rather than the closest three-inch stock size plus a filler strip. In a region where very few walls are square and ceiling heights change room to room, that is usually the difference between a kitchen that looks fitted and one that looks installed.
- Boxes. Three-quarter-inch plywood, not particleboard. Particleboard that has met water once — a slow dishwasher leak, a sink trap drip — swells and never recovers. Plywood survives it.
- Doors and drawer fronts. Shaker, flat-slab, raised panel, or inset. Paint-grade maple or poplar, stain-grade alder, hickory, oak, or walnut. Knotty alder is the regional favorite for a reason: it takes a warm stain and hides the dings of a real household.
- Hardware. Soft-close hinges and full-extension undermount drawer slides as standard. Not an upgrade.
- Finish. Sprayed in the shop, not brushed on site. Conversion varnish over stain, or a catalyzed enamel over paint. It is the difference between a finish that holds up to fifteen years of hands and one that chips at the pulls in two.
- Layout. Drawers where you reach down, doors where you reach up. Pull-outs for trash and spices. A pantry that uses the full height of the wall. This is the part that makes a kitchen work, and it is the part a catalog cannot do.
Typical installed pricing runs $350–$900 per linear ft installed depending on wood species, door style, and how much of the run is drawers. Full details on custom cabinets →
Why hiring one shop for cabinets and countertops matters in Northeast Heights
Most remodels in Northeast Heights involve two companies who have never met: one sets cabinets, another fabricates stone. When the countertop does not sit flat, each explains why it is the other’s fault, and you are left holding a gap, a tube of caulk, and two phone numbers.
We run both sides under one roof. Cabinets are set and leveled by our crew, then the countertop is templated against those cabinets, cut in the same building, and installed by the same people. If something is off, it is ours, and there is nobody to point at. That is not a slogan. It is the reason the business is structured this way, and it is the reason the seams line up.
It also has a practical scheduling benefit. One contractor means one calendar, so cabinets and tops land in sequence instead of leaving your kitchen torn out for a week while a second company finds an opening.
How a project runs with us
- Call or send the form. Jesus answers, asks what you are trying to do, and books a time to come measure. The Heights are a straight run down I-40 from the shop, about thirty-five minutes, and we are there nearly every week.
- On-site measurement and a straight conversation. We look at the room, the plumbing, the walls, and how you cook. If a material is wrong for your situation, this is where we say so.
- One written number. Template, fabrication, tear-out, install, haul-away, sealing. No per-item surprises after the fact.
- Slab or sample approval. For natural stone you see the actual slab and where the cuts land. For cabinets you approve a door sample and a finish chip.
- Fabrication in Edgewood. Cabinets built and finished in the shop. Countertops laser-templated once the cabinets are set and level, then cut on the CNC and polished.
- Install by the same crew. The people who measured are the people who build and the people who install. One point of contact from first visit to final walkthrough.
Countertop-only projects typically run one to two weeks from template to install. Full cabinet packages run four to eight weeks depending on wood and finish. A complete kitchen remodel is usually six to ten weeks once materials are approved.

Northeast Heights Questions
What is the most common project in the Northeast Heights?
Replacing an original or 1990s countertop on cabinets that are still good. Tile or laminate out, quartz or granite in, undermount sink, usually one day on site. The second most common is refacing those same cabinets at the same time.
Our 1970s Heights kitchen has a soffit and short upper cabinets. Can you fix that?
Yes. Removing the soffit and running new custom uppers to the ceiling is a standard job for us. It adds a full shelf of storage and changes the proportions of the room. We build the taller boxes in our shop to the measured ceiling height, which in those houses is rarely consistent wall to wall.
Do you serve the whole Heights?
From Uptown and the Fair Heights up to Tanoan, High Desert, and the Foothills, and across from Juan Tabo to Tramway. We are in the Northeast Heights most weeks.
How fast can you replace a countertop?
About two weeks from measurement to install, and a single day in your kitchen. Slab availability is the main variable. Call (505) 203-5508 and we will schedule the measurement.
