Eldorado kitchens, thirty-five years on
Eldorado was built mostly between the early 1980s and the late 1990s, on one-to-two-acre lots, with passive-solar design and a consistent set of builder finishes. That means we see the same kitchen over and over: oak or pickled cabinets, four-inch tile countertops with a tile backsplash, a drop-in sink, and a layout that is actually pretty good. The bones are fine. The surfaces are done.
That makes Eldorado one of the most satisfying places we work, because the fix is clear and the result is dramatic. Tile out, stone in. Doors replaced or refaced. Soft-close hardware. A kitchen that was built in 1989 reads as new, and the owner did not pay for a gut remodel.
What the sun does out here
Eldorado houses were designed to catch winter sun through big south-facing glass, and they do. The same glass puts hard high-altitude UV on a kitchen counter for hours a day in summer. Engineered quartz, with its resin binder, is the material most at risk of a gradual color shift in that location. We walk the room, look at where the sun actually lands at two in the afternoon, and recommend granite or quartzite for the exposed runs if it matters. Interior counters away from the glass are fine in anything.
Well water, dark stone, and sealing
Eldorado runs on community wells and the water is hard. On a polished black granite that shows as white spotting within a week of install if the sealer is not fresh. Our recommendation for Eldorado households is a lighter or more patterned stone, or a non-porous quartz, unless you are committed to wiping down a dark top. If you want the dark top anyway, we seal it at install and show you the water-bead test so you know when it is time again.
Cabinets: reface or replace?
Most Eldorado cabinets are plywood boxes that were installed well. If that is what we find, refacing is the smart money: new Shaker or flat-panel doors and drawer fronts, veneer on the frames, new hardware, at roughly half the cost of new cabinets. If the sink base has swelled from thirty years of slow drips, or if you want to open the kitchen to the living room, a new custom package is the right call, built to the walls in our Edgewood shop. We quote both and tell you which one we would pick.

Choosing a countertop material in Eldorado at Santa Fe
Most people arrive with a material already in mind. We will fabricate whatever you choose, but we are also going to tell you where each one struggles, because the climate here is not neutral. Eldorado homes were built around passive-solar south glass, which is wonderful in January and hard on resin-bound surfaces in July. Eldorado is on community well water that runs hard; it spots dark stone and shortens the interval between sealings.
- Granite — $55–$95 per sq ft installed. Igneous stone, every slab unique, indifferent to heat and sun. Needs sealing every one to three years. The default recommendation for sunrooms, outdoor bars, and anyone who cooks hard.
- Quartz — $65–$120 per sq ft installed. Engineered, non-porous, never sealed, consistent from sample to slab. The default for busy family kitchens and for anyone who will not think about maintenance. Keep it out of direct all-day sun.
- Marble — $75–$150 per sq ft installed. The most beautiful stone we cut and the softest. Perfect for vanities, fireplace surrounds, and a baking station. Etches from acids in a working kitchen, and we will say so.
- Quartzite — $85–$160 per sq ft installed. Natural stone that reads like marble and wears like granite. The answer when someone wants a white veined top in a kitchen that actually gets used.
Every one of those is templated, cut, and polished in our shop at 2369 Old Hwy 66, Edgewood, NM 87015, which is why we can hold a seam tight and keep an overhang even. You can see the full breakdown on our pricing guide.
How we build cabinets for Eldorado at Santa Fe homes
Custom does not mean expensive for its own sake. It means the box is built to the wall you actually have, in the increment you actually need, rather than the closest three-inch stock size plus a filler strip. In a region where very few walls are square and ceiling heights change room to room, that is usually the difference between a kitchen that looks fitted and one that looks installed.
- Boxes. Three-quarter-inch plywood, not particleboard. Particleboard that has met water once — a slow dishwasher leak, a sink trap drip — swells and never recovers. Plywood survives it.
- Doors and drawer fronts. Shaker, flat-slab, raised panel, or inset. Paint-grade maple or poplar, stain-grade alder, hickory, oak, or walnut. Knotty alder is the regional favorite for a reason: it takes a warm stain and hides the dings of a real household.
- Hardware. Soft-close hinges and full-extension undermount drawer slides as standard. Not an upgrade.
- Finish. Sprayed in the shop, not brushed on site. Conversion varnish over stain, or a catalyzed enamel over paint. It is the difference between a finish that holds up to fifteen years of hands and one that chips at the pulls in two.
- Layout. Drawers where you reach down, doors where you reach up. Pull-outs for trash and spices. A pantry that uses the full height of the wall. This is the part that makes a kitchen work, and it is the part a catalog cannot do.
Typical installed pricing runs $350–$900 per linear ft installed depending on wood species, door style, and how much of the run is drawers. Full details on custom cabinets →
Why hiring one shop for cabinets and countertops matters in Eldorado at Santa Fe
Most remodels in Eldorado at Santa Fe involve two companies who have never met: one sets cabinets, another fabricates stone. When the countertop does not sit flat, each explains why it is the other’s fault, and you are left holding a gap, a tube of caulk, and two phone numbers.
We run both sides under one roof. Cabinets are set and leveled by our crew, then the countertop is templated against those cabinets, cut in the same building, and installed by the same people. If something is off, it is ours, and there is nobody to point at. That is not a slogan. It is the reason the business is structured this way, and it is the reason the seams line up.
It also has a practical scheduling benefit. One contractor means one calendar, so cabinets and tops land in sequence instead of leaving your kitchen torn out for a week while a second company finds an opening.
How a project runs with us
- Call or send the form. Jesus answers, asks what you are trying to do, and books a time to come measure. Eldorado is a straight run up US-285 from I-25, under an hour from our shop, with no travel charge.
- On-site measurement and a straight conversation. We look at the room, the plumbing, the walls, and how you cook. If a material is wrong for your situation, this is where we say so.
- One written number. Template, fabrication, tear-out, install, haul-away, sealing. No per-item surprises after the fact.
- Slab or sample approval. For natural stone you see the actual slab and where the cuts land. For cabinets you approve a door sample and a finish chip.
- Fabrication in Edgewood. Cabinets built and finished in the shop. Countertops laser-templated once the cabinets are set and level, then cut on the CNC and polished.
- Install by the same crew. The people who measured are the people who build and the people who install. One point of contact from first visit to final walkthrough.
Countertop-only projects typically run one to two weeks from template to install. Full cabinet packages run four to eight weeks depending on wood and finish. A complete kitchen remodel is usually six to ten weeks once materials are approved.

Eldorado at Santa Fe Questions
Do you serve Eldorado, or just Santa Fe proper?
Eldorado specifically. It is an easy run up US-285, and the housing stock there is so consistent that we know the kitchens before we walk in. No travel charge.
My Eldorado kitchen has the original tile countertops. What replaces them?
Almost always a quartz or granite top on the existing cabinets if the boxes are sound, which in Eldorado they usually are. Tile comes out with its substrate, we template on the cabinets, and the new stone goes on in a day. Many people reface the cabinets at the same time, because the doors are from 1988 and the boxes are not the problem.
Our water is hard. Does that change what you recommend?
It does. Eldorado community water leaves mineral spotting on dark polished surfaces. A non-porous quartz in a lighter color hides it and wipes clean. If you want granite, we keep the sealer fresh and recommend a lighter or busier pattern that does not show every drop.
