Santa Fe cabinets have to be built to the house

No city we work in has walls that vary more than Santa Fe. An Eastside adobe with eighteen-inch walls that lean a degree. A 1940s territorial in Casa Solana with plaster that bows. A Las Campanas contemporary with square walls but fourteen-foot ceilings and a twelve-foot island. A 2019 Southside build with standard framing and a standard builder package. Stock cabinets handle maybe one of those. Custom cabinets handle all of them, because every box is built to the measured room.

We measure each wall at three heights, build in our Edgewood shop to those dimensions, spray the finish, and scribe the finished ends and fillers to the actual plaster on install. The countertop is templated against the installed cabinets and cut in the same building. For a Santa Fe house that is not a luxury. It is the minimum that produces a fitted result.

Traditional Santa Fe cabinetry

Stained knotty alder or hickory in a warm tone, with a flat-panel or simple inset door and a hand-rubbed glaze where it suits the house. Open shelving in alder for pottery. Exposed hinges on inset doors. A furniture-style island in a darker contrasting wood. A hutch of glass-front uppers. This is the kitchen that belongs in an adobe or a territorial, and it is built the same way the house was: by hand, to fit.

Modern Santa Fe cabinetry

Flat-slab rift white oak or walnut, or painted Shaker in white, greige, or a deep color on the island. Full-height pantries, integrated appliance panels, a separate bar or butler’s pantry in a contrasting finish. This is what Las Campanas, Tano Road, and the Northwest Quadrant are building, and the construction underneath is the same plywood box and sprayed catalyzed finish as the traditional work.

Dry air at 7,000 feet

Santa Fe humidity spends much of the year in the teens. Cabinets built in a humid factory shrink here, and the joints show it within a season. Ours are built and finished at the same altitude and in the same air in Edgewood, so what arrives has already acclimated.

Where we build in Santa Fe

The Eastside, Canyon Road, Casa Solana, Las Campanas, Tano Road, the Northwest Quadrant, Eldorado, Rancho Viejo, Tierra Contenta, and the Southside, plus Tesuque and La Cienega. Full details on our Santa Fe service page.

How we build cabinets for Santa Fe homes

Custom does not mean expensive for its own sake. It means the box is built to the wall you actually have, in the increment you actually need, rather than the closest three-inch stock size plus a filler strip. In a region where very few walls are square and ceiling heights change room to room, that is usually the difference between a kitchen that looks fitted and one that looks installed.

  • Boxes. Three-quarter-inch plywood, not particleboard. Particleboard that has met water once — a slow dishwasher leak, a sink trap drip — swells and never recovers. Plywood survives it.
  • Doors and drawer fronts. Shaker, flat-slab, raised panel, or inset. Paint-grade maple or poplar, stain-grade alder, hickory, oak, or walnut. Knotty alder is the regional favorite for a reason: it takes a warm stain and hides the dings of a real household.
  • Hardware. Soft-close hinges and full-extension undermount drawer slides as standard. Not an upgrade.
  • Finish. Sprayed in the shop, not brushed on site. Conversion varnish over stain, or a catalyzed enamel over paint. It is the difference between a finish that holds up to fifteen years of hands and one that chips at the pulls in two.
  • Layout. Drawers where you reach down, doors where you reach up. Pull-outs for trash and spices. A pantry that uses the full height of the wall. This is the part that makes a kitchen work, and it is the part a catalog cannot do.

Typical installed pricing runs $350–$900 per linear ft installed depending on wood species, door style, and how much of the run is drawers. Full details on custom cabinets →

Why hiring one shop for cabinets and countertops matters in Santa Fe

Most remodels in Santa Fe involve two companies who have never met: one sets cabinets, another fabricates stone. When the countertop does not sit flat, each explains why it is the other’s fault, and you are left holding a gap, a tube of caulk, and two phone numbers.

We run both sides under one roof. Cabinets are set and leveled by our crew, then the countertop is templated against those cabinets, cut in the same building, and installed by the same people. If something is off, it is ours, and there is nobody to point at. That is not a slogan. It is the reason the business is structured this way, and it is the reason the seams line up.

It also has a practical scheduling benefit. One contractor means one calendar, so cabinets and tops land in sequence instead of leaving your kitchen torn out for a week while a second company finds an opening.

How a project runs with us

  1. Call or send the form. Jesus answers, asks what you are trying to do, and books a time to come measure. Santa Fe is about an hour from our Edgewood shop via NM-14 or I-25, and we schedule Santa Fe measurements in blocks so there is no travel charge.
  2. On-site measurement and a straight conversation. We look at the room, the plumbing, the walls, and how you cook. If a material is wrong for your situation, this is where we say so.
  3. One written number. Template, fabrication, tear-out, install, haul-away, sealing. No per-item surprises after the fact.
  4. Slab or sample approval. For natural stone you see the actual slab and where the cuts land. For cabinets you approve a door sample and a finish chip.
  5. Fabrication in Edgewood. Cabinets built and finished in the shop. Countertops laser-templated once the cabinets are set and level, then cut on the CNC and polished.
  6. Install by the same crew. The people who measured are the people who build and the people who install. One point of contact from first visit to final walkthrough.

Countertop-only projects typically run one to two weeks from template to install. Full cabinet packages run four to eight weeks depending on wood and finish. A complete kitchen remodel is usually six to ten weeks once materials are approved.

FAQ

Custom Cabinets in Santa Fe: Questions

Do you come to Santa Fe to build cabinets?

Yes. Santa Fe is about an hour from the shop, we batch measurements and installs, and there is no travel charge. Cabinets are built in Edgewood and delivered finished. Call (505) 203-5508.

How do you handle an adobe wall that is not straight?

We measure it at three heights, build the boxes to the real dimensions, and scribe the finished ends and fillers to the plaster on install day. The result reads as if the cabinets grew out of the wall.

What do custom cabinets cost in Santa Fe?

Typical installed pricing is $350–$900 per linear ft installed. Santa Fe kitchens skew toward the upper half because people choose stain-grade alder, hickory, or walnut and more furniture-style details. One written number after we measure.

Can you match existing woodwork in an older house?

Usually. Bring us a drawer front or a door and we will match the species, the profile, and the stain as closely as the wood allows, and show you a sample before building.
